Overview
Heavy metals — principally lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic — are persistent environmental pollutants with well-established reproductive toxicity. Unlike organic chemicals, they cannot be metabolised or excreted efficiently and accumulate in testicular tissue over time. Cadmium is particularly insidious: it mimics zinc at the cellular level, displacing it from the enzymatic processes critical to spermatogenesis, and directly damages the blood-testis barrier. Lead disrupts the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and impairs testosterone biosynthesis. Sources of exposure include old water pipes, contaminated food, industrial emissions, e-cigarette vapour, and occupational environments. Even low-level chronic exposure shows measurable effects on sperm count, motility, morphology, and DNA integrity.
