Overview

Adipose (fat) tissue is endocrinologically active. It contains aromatase — the enzyme that converts testosterone to oestrogen. The more excess body fat a man carries, particularly visceral abdominal fat, the more testosterone is converted to oestrogen, creating a self-reinforcing cycle: lower testosterone promotes more fat storage, more fat promotes lower testosterone and higher oestrogen. The result is a feminising hormonal profile that devastates sperm production, motility, and morphology. Sperm DNA fragmentation is significantly elevated in obese men.
