The majority of daily testosterone production occurs during slow-wave and REM sleep, tightly coupled to circadian rhythms and pulsatile LH release from the pituitary. Chronic sleep restriction below seven hours reduces testosterone by 10–15% within days. Shift work disrupts the circadian regulation of the entire HPG axis — suppressing LH pulsatility, reducing intratesticular testosterone, and elevating cortisol. A 2013 study found men sleeping fewer than six hours had testosterone levels equivalent to men ten years older.
