Zinc is the most well-established essential mineral for male reproductive function. It serves as a critical cofactor for testosterone biosynthesis in Leydig cells, is essential for over 300 enzymatic reactions, and is directly required for the packaging of sperm DNA into the dense, protected form needed for healthy fertilisation. The prostate and testes contain among the highest zinc concentrations in the body. Modern Western diets — dominated by ultra-processed foods — are systematically zinc-depleted.
